Colorsoft has a 7 inch display built on a black-and-white panel with a color filter layered on top, which is how color e-ink works. The panel itself renders at 1264 × 1680 pixels, 300 ppi in black and white. The color layer has less detail: Amazon lists its effective color resolution at 632 × 840, 150 ppi.

In plain terms, the screen is sharper in black and white than it is in color. That’s normal for this kind of display, not a flaw in any particular device.

Why CoverLock exports at full resolution

CoverLock builds your cover at the full 1264 × 1680 panel resolution, not the 632 × 840 effective color figure. That lets Kindle’s own rendering pipeline handle the color downsampling, which keeps more detail than shrinking the image ourselves ever could.

What color will actually look like

Colorsoft’s color e-ink is not as vibrant as a phone or tablet screen. Colors read as muted and a little softer, closer to a printed page than a backlit display. Photos with strong, simple color blocks tend to hold up better than images that depend on subtle gradients.
